Adagio
1893 · oil on paperboard
Dimensions 46.7 × 72.4 cm
Tom Roberts had a great fondness for music and often attended musical performances, parties and counted a great many musicians as his personal friends. In "Adagio" Roberts breaks from his usual style and leans heavily into the painting approach of the symbolist painters of western Europe to provide more room for the viewer to contemplate and feel the painting rather than to see a realistic depiction from afar.
