Altarpiece of the Virgin Mary
1375-1400 · Tempera on wood
Dimensions 324 × 257.5 cm
Collection: Museus de Sitges
"This altarpiece of the Virgin Mary, located in the Gothic Hall of the Maricel Museum of Sitges, has three panels. The central one shows the Virgin Mary seated with two angels and the traditional Calvary crowning the whole, while the sides depict six passages from Mary’s life. The chronological layout of the scenes alternates in each of the side panels. Thus, the first composition, located in the panel to the left of the viewer, is the annunciation by the Archangel Gabriel, while the second one, located on the panel on the left, is the visit to the Virgin Mary by her cousin Elizabeth. In the second row, but inverting the direction of reading, we can see the Nativity on one side and the Epiphany on the other. Finally, the last row recounts the flight from Egypt and the presentation of Jesus at the temple. Numerous figurations of prophets and saints appear in the mountings that separate each of the panels. We have no information on the whereabouts of the predella, the bench or lower part of the altarpiece, which must have been part of this same set. Regarding the provenance of this work, even though we are not sure of its specific location, it has been posited to come from the diocese of La Seu d’Urgell. Nor do we have any information on the altarpiece’s comings and goings in private commerce before 1939, when it became part of the private collection of the painter Ramon de Capmany i de Montaner, from Canet de Mar, from which it joined the collection of Dr Jesús Pérez-Rosales.
