The title of the painting was taken from the last line of “The Star-Spangled Banner” which had just become the official national anthem of the United States at the time of this painting. Demuth's modernist style known as precisionism (or Cubist Realism) emphasized the geometric form of structure and light almost to the point of abstraction.
