Betty Gallowhur (Betty Newell)

During the latter half of Curran's life, Curran painted some of his best-known works nearby the Cragsmoor summer arts colony where he and his family summered. These works are of young women and girls dressed in light colors. During the 1910s and 1920s, Curran moved the settings of his paintings away from windy landscapes to calmer, peaceful flower gardens. In the portrait of Betty Newell (Betty Gallowhur), Curran portrays ambient light filtering through the subject's hair and illuminating the features of her face. Her white dress displays the reflected shadows of the surrounding foliage. Betty Newell donated the portrait to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1996.
