Courbet up until 1862 had not been much of a still life flower painter however while visiting a friend in western France who had an extensive garden, greenhouses and a library full of botanical books he enthusiastically began painting in the genre. Upon his friends encouragement Courbet stayed for 11 months and painted about twenty paintings.
