Cementiri de Montmartre (Montmartre Cemetery)

"Cemeteries, burials and, in general, the looming presence of death were quite common themes in Santiago Rusiñol’s paintings and literary output, especially during the 1890s. Cementiri de Montmartre (Cemetery of Montmartre), painted in 1891, is an extraordinary painting in which Rusiñol used a play of lights basically rendered in three colours (grey, ochre and white) to create a gloomy atmosphere. The painting is shown from a downward-looking perspective taken from near the artist’s flat in Moulin de la Galette. (Museu del Cau Ferrat, Sitges, 30270)"
