During World War I Mondrian began taking his cubism approach to painting even further into the realm of abstract by no longer using diagonal lines and distancing himself from his old favored subjects of trees, land and seascapes. Composition was developed from his studies of a church. Soon Mondrian would no longer base his paintings on a subject but would pure paint as he developed his Neo-plasticism approach.
