Curious

The idea behind the cycle "White Eyes" was to cut out eyes of faces to concentrate view on the play of transparent vs. opaque colours to achieve emotional effects. This painting was one of the last of the series where colour layers became quite complex. Still eyes were not really cut out and the effect of the white eyes was stronger on most viewers than the artist had anticipated. Critics felt alienated and the whole exhibition was not very successful in terms of sale. It proved an old saying that however you paint a face ... public will judge it by the eyes... even more when they are reduced, apparently
