Desire and Satisfaction

Jan Toorop was always receptive to the various art styles running throughout Europe in the nineteenth century and often crossed artistic boundaries between movements and schools. In Desire and Satisfaction Toorop was at the height of his experimentations within the symbolist movement while also participating in the craft driven art nouveau movement. Desire and Satisfaction was intended as a design for a stained-glass window project that he had been working on however the work took on a life of its own.
