Elephant
1790 · Hanging scroll, ink on paper
Dimensions 155.5 × 77.3 cm
Collection: Art Whisperer
It is believed that Elephant was created by Itō Jakuchū in his mid 70s. At age 14 an elephant was brought to Japan and walked through Itō's home town and it is likely that he witnessed the procession first hand and this work could largely be from his own recollection of the event. The composition of the piece is of note as the sides of the elephant spill out past the frame of the scroll helping to emphasize the size of the elephant and creating an almost abstract depiction unlike many of his much more detailed depictions of wildlife.
