Evolution, No. 13, Group VI
1908 · oil on canvas
Dimensions (129.5 x 99 cm)
Collection: Art Whisperer
The Evolution works, from 1908, feature symbolic and figurative imagery drawn from Christian iconography and Theosophical themes. Formally speaking, they're also characterized by fewer freely moving lines. Hilma af Klint produced these canvases continuously, and each took three days to complete. Collectively, these works consider theories of Evolution, which remained a contested concept when the artist made them, nearly fifty years after the 1859 publication of Darwin's On the Origin of Species.
