In 1860 excavations were conducted on the town of Pompeii and amongst the lost city skeletal remains of a soldier clad in full armor had been uncovered. The discoveries of the excavation were a very sensational topic of the time and this painting of a brave and loyal soldier standing his post even as certain death was upon him became an instant classic amongst Victorian Britain.
