Dove spent much of his artistic career either living on a boat (in warm weather) or living near water (in winter). As in works by his friend Georgia OKeeffe, the subject of this painting is seen close-up and enlarged, forcing the viewer to concentrate on the abstract qualities of a familiar object.

Arthur Garfield Dove (August 2, 1880 – November 23, 1946) was an American artist. An early American modernist, he is often considered the first American abstract painter. Dove used a wide range of media, sometimes in unconventional combinations, to produce his abstractions and his abstract landscapes.
