In the 1860's Gustave Courbet began painting a series of wildlife landscapes and hunting scenes which often included snow. Courbet's realism approach to painting brought a hard edge to his nature paintings which often included violent or unpleasant subject matter. Courbet himself was an avid hunter and quite comfortable painting the theme.
