Granadina / Gitana de l'Albaicin (Woman from Granada / The Gipsy from Albaicín)
1895 · Oil on canvas
Dimensions 201 × 88.5 cm
Collection: Museus de Sitges
"Granadina (Woman from Granada) is one of the first works painted by Rusiñol on his second trip to Granada, where he arrived in October 1895. It is one of the most important paintings in Santiago Rusiñol’s artistic output. In this work, we can see a gypsy woman in Granada’s Sacromonte neighbourhood with a grave, serious face, her eyes dreamily lost in the distance. She is resting sideways on a white wall which has a window opening up onto a background of vegetation featuring a pruned row of cypress trees. It is a painting of farewell and revelation. The white of the walls which frame the composition and the gardens seen in the background are the latest version of the white galleries of Sitges. The encroachment of the ivy, the grove of trees and the row of cypresses signal the start of what would prove to be a long period in Rusiñol’s artistic output defined – in an excessively reductionist way – as his stage of garden paintings.
