In Ictu Oculi

One of the parts of the hieroglyphs of the afterlife, "Los jeroglíficos de las postrimerías" in Spanish, refer to the dilemma of salvation and the condemnation of the soul. The artwork represents Death carrying under his left arm a coffin, and in that same hand, Death carries a scythe. With his right hand, he puts out a candle and he writes: "In octu oculi", which translates to "In a blink of an eye". It's a reminder of how fast life passes by, and how fast time flies. Below, representations of worldly glories appear: neither the Church (staff, miter, and cardinal's hat) , the kings (the crown, scepter), wealth, wisdom (the books), or war (sword) can escape Death.
