"Miquel Utrillo was one of Santiago Rusiñol’s friends and fellow bohemians. Born in Barcelona in 1862, his parents’ exile led him to France on two occasions, and he ended up finishing his engineering studies in Paris. A man with a restless, multifaceted personality, he was a decorator, journalist, art critic, promoter of cultural activities, illustrator, poster artist and painter. In the spring of 1895, he arrived in Sitges for the first time as he accompanied Rusiñol. In this painting, Utrillo shows a partial image of the ground floor of Cau Ferrat from the Sala del Brollador (Fountain Room). It was painted just months after its official opening in November 1894, as part of the events of the Third Modernist Festival. The Cau Ferrat was the home and studio that Rusiñol had built in Sitges, where he transferred his collections of art and antiques. This painting gives us an idea of the appearance of the Cau Ferrat during its early years and shows how with the passage of time, its contents were boosted as Rusiñol’s collections grew.
