Joseph the Carpenter
1842 · oil on canvas
Dimensions 137 × 102 cm
Saint Joseph the carpenter was a prominent religious figure in Lorraine during the 17th century. Here Joseph can be seen working by a candle held by a young and captivated Jesus Christ. While the candle is the only source of light in the painting the face of Jesus seems to radiantly outshine the candle which was a recurring effect that La Tour has used in his work to signify the presence of divinity.
