1820s · Nishiki-e (錦絵, Woodblock print ink and color on paper)

Dimensions 36.5 × 25.7 cm

Collection: Central Saint Martins Museum & Study Collection: Japanese Actor Prints

This woodblock print depicts the actor Kataoka Ichizo I (片岡市蔵) as Wappa Kikuo-maru(童菊王丸). He is wearing a black and white check kimono patterned with pink and blue flowers. He is carrying two swords and a bamboo bow and arrow. He is wearing thick leggings with rope sandals. There is heavy cloud partially covering the moon and two geese flying in the background, with one appearing to carry a scroll. Some traditional characters are just visible on the scroll which indicates it might be a Kakejiku(掛け軸, a Japanese hanging scroll) which are made of paper or cloth on which painting, or calligraphy is drawn. These scrolls were hung as interior decoration but were also worshipped and appreciated.
