Lagniappe

Horses are partly the reason I started out drawing and creating visual art. I painted Lagniappe when I was feeling down, weeks of feeling like no one cared and that I had nothing to show for my studies and drawing. I looked back at my Instagram account 'SovereignNox,' and couldn't help but stare at a painting I created in February of the same year in 2020. It was a horse that I painted with a unique process under a black and white filter. I thought to myself that if I retried the same concept and painted another horse, I could see the improvement of my art. The process was me painting under a black and white filter but choosing random colors; when I removed the black and white, it became an explosion of color. I was more than happy with this painting that felt like a gift to me. Therefore I called it the Lagniappe, a gift to myself when the world didn't care. It was an overall morale booster and brought my chin up when my head was under the mud for months. I learned a valuable lesson from this painting, that when you're feeling stagnant, look back at a time when you flowed smoothly and take inspiration from the past.
