Lili Elbe
1928 · watercolor
Dimensions 77 × 65 cm
Lili Elbe was a trans woman born in 1882 as Einar Wegener. As a painter Einar married fellow artist Gerda Wegener and during the course of their relationship began the transformation to become a woman. Lili Elbe became a great muse and the favorite model of Gerda Wegener who painted her quite often. During early social functions when the Wegeners would be seen on the town Einar would be introduced as Gerda's cousin Lili. It was later a shock to many when it was revealed that the beautifully seductive model that Gerda Wegener had captivated the artworld with was her transgender husband. Gerda Wegener was very supportive of Lili Elbes transformation and delighted in accentuating all of the beautiful qualities of her husband.
