Marriage of Peleus and Thetis was commissioned by Peter Paul Rubens as part of his Ovid's Metamorphoses series. Rubens would sometimes employ fellow painters in Antwerp to enlarge oil sketches that he designed for large scale projects. Jordaens being one of the premiere painters was often trusted to paint Rubens designs on a larger scale.
