Painted from Church's studio in New York from sketches made during his travels to Ecuador a decade earlier. Church took some liberties to make the landscape more exotic by adding tropical palms to the scene which would never survive in the high altitudes of the Andes. While dormant in the painting the volcano known as Pichincha was known to frequently and violently erupt.
