Portrait of Bronisław Brykner in a fantastic costume
1908 · Oil on plywood
Dimensions 187 × 112 cm
"At the "Młodej Sztuki" ball, which took place at the Warsaw Philharmonic during the carnival of 1908, Stabrowski's student, Bronisław Brykner, was dressed in a tissue paper costume of an evil spirit. Inspired by this disguise, a stylized, decorative composition was created, emanating mystery and anxiety. In the rich work of Stabrowski, mostly lost and dispersed, fantastic portraits, characterized by Art Nouveau styling, are among the most outstanding achievements." [Elżbieta Charazińska]
