Red Cavalry Riding
1932 · oil on canvas
Dimensions 91 × 140 cm
Collection: Art Whisperer
Red Cavalry Riding found it's way to the world three years before Malevich's untimely death. In this artwork, we see a blend of the techniques he possessed. Avant-garde, in the way he leaves out all but the necessary details. We see a field, horses, and the sky. There's symbolism in the colours chosen for the horses and each line making up the field. The painter's qualities in the strongly applied oil paint in the lines flaunt his affinity for fauvism. And last, we follow the fine brushwork up from the horses to the sky, reminding us of impressionism at it's purest.
