Shiva in a large hat
2021 · Digital Art
Dimensions 100 × 75 cm
The first of Barabeke's "Rijks session", a series entirely based on artworks hosted by Rijks Museum, Amsterdam. This was created by combining their statuette of Shiva Nataraja with the painting "Girl in a large hat" by Caesar Boëtius van Everdingen. Barabeke used his "tranfiguration" technique, which consists in brutalising the source images by using them as they were paint and brush, replicating them thousands of times, with nothing else added and no hand drawing involved. Barabeke chose to use artworks from Rijks Museum as an homage to their contemporary and liberal policies (they provide to the public hi-resolution images for all the art in their collection, encouraging people to get creative with it and even eventually even profit from it).
