In 1891 Tanner had settled in Paris to escape the racial prejudice he faced in the United States. During a brief visit to the United State Tanner stayed at the home of family friend, abolitionist minister, educator and social reformer George Washington Gray. Short;y after the visit Tanner painted this scene of Gray's childhood.
