Tissot was an early and avid aficionado of Japanese woodblock prints, from which silhouetted figure and the prominent clump of vegetation in this work are thought to derive. Until this painting reappeared at auction in 1981, its composition was known for only by means of a related drypoint. When that print was exhibited in London, in 1876, it was inexplicably singled out by a critic who described it as

Jacques Joseph Tissot (15 October 1836 – 8 August 1902), Anglicized as James Tissot (/ˈtɪsoʊ/), was a French painter and illustrator. He was a successful painter of Paris society before moving to London in 1871. He became famous as a genre painter of fashionably dressed women shown in various scenes of everyday life.
