States of Mind II: Those Who Go
1913 · oil on canvas
Dimensions 70.8 × 95.9 cm
Collection: Art Whisperer
Those who stay is third in the "States of Mind" series by Umberto Boccioni, with all three paintings taking place in a train station exploring the subjects through different transitions of time. A series of diagonal lines sweep across the canvas to produce a rushing sense of movement as if the subjects are departing the station. Boccioni said he sought to express the feelings of "loneliness, anguish, and dazed confusion."
