States of Mind III; Those Who Stay
1911 · oil on canvas
Dimensions 70.8 × 95.9 cm
Collection: Art Whisperer
Those who stay is third in the "States of Mind" series by Umberto Boccioni. All three paintings take place in a train station exploring the subjects through different transitions of time. The vertical lines present in Those Who Stay are used to convey a sense of weight and sadness to those left behind as the train leaves the station. A driving concept of the futurist movement which Boccioni helped form was to move forward and progress while not languishing in the past.
