The Cemetery Entrance
1825 · Oil on canvas
Dimensions 143 × 110 cm
Collection: Art Whisperer
During the later stages of his life graveyards began to appear at a greater frequency in Friedrich's work as his popularity dwindled due to the public's move away from romanticism and he fell into a melancholic state. The Cemetery Entrance was started in 1825 but remains an unfinished work. In 1830 Friedrich suffered a stroke which left him with limb paralysis and effectively ended his productivity.
