The Cradle
1872 · oil on canvas
Dimensions 56 × 46 cm
Collection: Art Whisperer
The Cradle is perhaps Morisot's most famous painting. The cradle features Berthe Morisot's sister Edma watching over her daughter Blanche. Morisot chose to show The Cradle at the Impressionist exhibit in 1874 where she was the first female painter to exhibit with the group. The Cradle was mostly past over at the exhibition however it did receive several favorable reviews by critics. Unable to sell the painting, Morisot stopped showing it and gave it to her sister to hang in her home where it stayed until 1930 when it was purchased by the Louvre.
