The Engraver (bust of a man)
1914 · Pastel , Gouache , Paper
Dimensions 47 × 48 cm
Collection: Art Whisperer
A man in profile, his face half-dark, reads a book with a numerical title from which emanates an unreal light. The encrypted title would be borrowed from the alphabet created by the German Benedictine Jean de Trithème (1462-1516) and known only to alchemists. The key to the work is now lost.
