The Feast of Peleus
between 1872 and 1881 · oil on panel
Dimensions 149.5 × 442.6 cm
Collection: BMAG collection
"This painting was largely completed in 1873, but touched up when prepared for exhibition at the Grosvenor in the Summer Exhibition of 1881. It represents the marriage of the mortal Peleus to the sea-goddess Thetis, with all the Olympian gods in attendance. Eris, the Goddess of Discord, casts an apple onto the table marked 'for the fairest', an event which in turn, planted the seeds for the Trojan War. This design is the central panel of the predella of the 'Troy Tiptych', also in Birmingham's Collection. A larger unfinished version is in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum."
