The Fight #20
2014 · color film negative, digitally scanned and edited
Dimensions 250 × 167 cm
Selected from earlier undergrad work, this is a photograph from my second photo book, The Fight. It was an exploration into using art as a method of expressing and managing my budding anxiety and depression, particularly following my first suicide attempt in 2013. This photograph was taken from the bridge over the river near which I spent many hours contemplating the merits of life and death. The water, at times either serene or violent, ultimately became a symbol for something unknowable and unpredictable. Is it any wonder that water, with its capacity to both heal and damage, makes up most of a human? One particular poem that has stuck with me over the past few years, but especially while making this work, is Langston Hughes' succinctly powerful Suicide's Note: The calm, Cool face of the river Asked me for a kiss.
