The Fort and Ten Pound Island, Gloucester
1847 · oil on canvas
Dimensions 50.8 × 76.2 cm
Collection: Art Whisperer
A panoramic view of Lane's native city of Gloucester. While sailing ships dotting the landscape appear to be the main subject of the painting Lane used the horizon and the stillness of the water to emphasize the lighting of the scene. Lane was considered one of the prominent figures in the American Luminism movement.
