The Oreads
1902 · Oil on Canvas
Dimensions 236 × 182 cm
Collection: Art Whisperer
In Greek mythology, an Oread is a mountain nymph. They differ from each other according to their dwelling: the Idaeae were from Mount Ida, Peliades from Mount Pelion, etc. They were associated with Artemis, since the goddess, when she went out hunting, preferred mountains and rocky precipices. They were very aggressive. At the signal of Artemis, they would run to join her and form a spectacular retinue behind the deity. With the arrival of dawn, these mountain nymphs would rush back to the sky to their own realm.
