Collection: Art Whisperer

Painted in the French Pyrenees artist colony of Céret in September of 1913 where Gris coincided with fellow Spaniard and friend Pablo Picasso. The composition and fragmenting the head was heavily influenced by Picasso's "Heads" which were painted several months before. The subject is believed to be Frank Haviland who was a wealthy American patron of the avant-garde arts scene and was in Céret restoring a monastery to be used to house his important African arts collection.
