Tired is a painting that was based off of Krohg's banned novel Albertine. The novel and the paintings focus on the title character Albertine who is an unmarried seamstress that is forced into prostitution by the social system of the time. The debate following the banning of the published work ultimately ended in the abolition of prostitution in Norway.
