Inspired by the 1852 novel Uncle Tom's Cabin. Paintings depicting Uncle Tom and Little Eva were very popular amongst abolitionists as the novel was a huge literary success and had a profound effect on attitudes toward African Americans and slavery in the U.S. and is said to have "helped lay the groundwork for the Civil War".
