Venetian Onion Seller
1880-1882 · Oil on canvas
Dimensions 95 × 70 cm
Collection: Art Whisperer
Between 1880 and 1882 Sargent spent time in Venice. During this period Sargent went on to paint numerous studies of the local inhabitants and close up views of doorways, alleys and street corners as opposed to the more popular vistas that Venice has to offer. Typical of Sargent's approach, "Venetian Onion Seller" places full attention on the young vendor while hastily painting a rough view of the city in a window behind her for context.
