Woodland Waterfall
1916 · oil on canvas
Dimensions 121.9000015258789 × 132.5 cm
Woodland Waterfall's creation took place four years after Thomson first started with his sketch-work (thanks to advice from J. E. H. MacDonald, who was one of the Group of Seven) and one year before his untimely death. His well-developed skillsets in penmanship and copperplate writing proved handy as he had quickly become a productive and respected artist. He drew his inspiration largely from Ontario's landscapes, especially from Algonquin Park, and he spent most of the year - except for the winters - there, focusing on canoeing and fishing. Woodland Waterfall comes in a dark, contrasting colour palette. As we look closer, we can see how each well-defined brushstroke carries excellent details and a generously applied amount of paint. No shape or form has gone unnoticed, and we can appreciate his unique style with its influences of Art Nouveau.
