The piece *Young Woman Carrying A Pumpkin* was one of the many commissioned pieces requested by Sultan Abdülhamid II, accomplished by Fausto Zonaro in 1889. Fausto was the appointed court painter of the sultan’s family, living in the Ottoman Empire capital named Constantinople (now Istanbul), with his wife. He was commissioned many paintings depicting the life events of 15th-century Ottoman sultan, Mehmed II. Aside from being the court painter, he was a significant figure in the western art scene development at the time as he taught painting to Ottoman elite family members, along with showcasing his work in his studio in Pera (now Beyoğlu).

About Fausto Zonaro
Fausto Zonaro (18 September 1854 – 19 July 1929) was an Italian painter, best known for his Realist style paintings of life and history of the Ottoman Empire. In 1896 he was nominated as the court painter for the Ottoman Empire where he remained until 1909.
