Kamakura Period Japan

The Kamakura Period of Japan was between approximately 1185-1333. During this time Japan was in a state of war and governing rule had moved away from the imperial aristocracy and to the samurai. This era in history is sometimes called "the age of the warriors" however exchanges with China's Song dynasty continued and Buddhism greatly flourished in Japan. Much of the art of this era is in the tradition of religious, historical and folk tale themes. Popular artforms of the time were sculpture which saw a renaissance in the era as well as painted hand scrolls, yamato-e style paintings and mandalas. While many works of art have come from the Kamakura era unfortunately many of the artists names have been lost to history.
