And They Still Say Fish is Expensive!
1894 · Oil on canvas
Dimensions 151.5 × 204 cm
Collection: Art Whisperer
Painted during the ten year period of Social Realism genre painting by Joaquín Sorolla. The turn of the century would see Sorolla's artistic direction change to a much lighter style. Inside a boat two elderly fishermen with a serious and worried face look after a younger one lying on the ground after having an accident. From his torso hangs a protective medal against the misfortunes of the sea like the one that just happened to him. Around the characters there are various fishing tools and even some fish caught.
