Banks of the Stream near the Corot Property, Ville d'Avray

Corot was about 27 and still a pupil of Bertin when he painted this simple but efficient scene. It depicts either a stream or more likely a pond located near the Corot property, the limit of which is indicated by the large poplar tree on the right. Under it, Corot's mother and sister are depicted. On the left, probably a sheperd girl as well as some cattle enjoying the water, the reflection of which can be seen as well as that of the path on the calm, dark surface. This painting was in the collection of Count Armand Doria, it is now in the Thaw Collection, Jointly Owned by The Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Morgan Library & Museum. Alors que Corot est encore l'élève de Bertin, il exécute ce tableau, "Ville d'Avray, Bord de l'étang près la propriété Corot" d'un pinceau vif et assuré, dans son style bien affirmé. On peut y voir l'étang en question, qui se trouvait en bordure de la propriété dont un grand peuplier marque l'entrée à droite. Sous cet arbre, la mère et la soeur de Corot sont sobrement, mais délicatement, représentées. A gauche, une bergère ou une fermière surveille ses animaux, dont un bovin qui se désaltère dans l'eau noire ou il se reflète de même que le sable jaune du chemin montant. L'ensemble est calme, lumineux et ordonné dans un cadre presque carré. Ce tableau a fait partie de la collection du Comte Armand Doria, il fait à présent partie de la Thaw collection, détenue par le MET de New York et la Morgan Library and Museum.
