About the collection:
Count Armand Doria (1824-1896) was a member of an ancient and illustrious family of genoese origin that has manifested an interest for art generation after generation. From 1856 to his death, he became a visionary art collector notably of impressionist and pre-impressionist painters. His vast collection, around 7000 items, included artworks from Millet, Manet, Corot, Morisot, Monet, Renoir, Pissarro, Jongkind, Degas, Cézanne, Sisley and others. Rather than the opinion of critics, who were very severe against impressionism, he followed his own tastes and protected artists, against critics as well as financially, and enjoyed welcoming them in his home for extended periods of time, in particular Adolphe-Félix Cals, Gustave Colin and Victor Vignon. In 1899, after his death, a large part of his collection was auctioned off in Paris and many of its paintings can nowadays be found around the world in the most prestigious museums.
