Bijin niwa asobi (美人庭遊び, Amusements of beauties in a garden)
1849 · Nishiki-e (錦絵, Woodblock print ink and color on paper)
Dimensions 37.5 × 25.3 cm
Collection: Central Saint Martins Museum & Study Collection: Japanese Actor Prints
The character stands turned to the right, with their head turning back and looking at something the viewer can't see. This print is not part of a kabuki play, but rather an actual portrayal of Japanese femininity in this period. Mainly blue and pink colours in this print with reeds and grasses making the background a key part of the print with lots of rich natural detail. The darkness of the sky could indicate night time, as daytime skies are usually left white in similar prints. We have included it in the collection as a comparison to the gender performativity the actors in the plays portray.
