Onoe Kikugoro III as Shimizu Sammonnosuke Seigen (三代目尾上菊五郎 清水三門ノ助清玄)
1832 · Nishiki-e (錦絵, Woodblock print ink and color on paper)
Dimensions 34 × 25.4 cm
Collection: Central Saint Martins Museum & Study Collection: Japanese Actor Prints
Onoe Kikugoro III was a popular actor, especially for his style of transforming from a ghost to a beautifull person. In his hand he holds a Janome Gasa (蛇目傘 a snake's eye umbrella). This pattern has existed in Japan since ancient times and has been used to ward off evil spirits because it resembles the eyes of a snake, the messenger of the gods. Unfurling the umbrella is auspicious, as it means 'to protect you from the difficulties that pour down upon you' and 'to bring you long-lasting happiness under one roof'. Seigen becomes a ghost because of his unfulfilled love, and is burnt to death in a huge bell. What an ironic ending.
