Cornelius Allerton
1822 · Oil on canvas
Dimensions 83.8 × 69.9 cm
Ammi Phillips traveled extensively throughout the New England states of The United States as an extremely prolific Itinerant often painting several members of a family and then moving on to the next commision. While Ammi Phillips often kept with a formula and many of the poses or dress are re used from painting to painting he often added small details to each piece to signify the sitters profession or social stature. Cornelius Allerton is painted holding a medical text to show that he is a doctor and the small horse painted in the background would show his ownership and love of horses.
